Celebrating the incredible 2024 ANU Student Research Conference 

In a lofty space, naturally framed by timber beams – better known as the Kambri Superfloor, a cohort of intelligent and passionate students at the Australian National University came together to present their coursework research in front of a welcoming audience of staff, students, and community members. This was the scene of the much-anticipated 2024 Student Research Conference.

Australians under 50 are experiencing stagnating life expectancy while older cohorts, especially men, are living longer, according to new research from The Australian National University (ANU). 

The study examined longevity trends and patterns in six English-speaking countries (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States) and compared them with other high-income countries.

Languages across the planet are disappearing at an alarming rate. ANU psycholinguist Evan Kidd believes multilingual societies are key to reversing this trend. 

Before 1788, the number of languages spoken in Australia was at least 300 – though experts estimate there may have been more than 700. 

Today, only 12 are still being learnt as a first language by children. 

The United Nations has warned that 3,000 languages could disappear before the end of the century at a rate of one every two weeks.
