CASS 2024 Global South Visiting Fellowship Program

The purpose of the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences Global South Visiting Fellowship Scheme is to host scholars from the Global South, foster academic exchange and collaboration among scholars and build enduring research partnerships with scholars from the Global South. This scheme aims to provide opportunities for researchers in academic institutions from countries in the ‘Global South’ to visit the Australian National University (ANU) for deep engagement within the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) – through masterclasses, public lectures, conferences, seminars, exhibitions, performances, collaborative conversations, and stakeholder meetings – with the aim of facilitating knowledge sharing, capacity building, enhanced partnerships for international projects, and cross-cultural dialogue. The objectives of the scheme are to:

  1. support promising and emerging researchers from the Global South;
  2. establish ongoing collaborations between the ANU and research institutions in the Global South; and
  3. provide mentoring and support to the scholars to increase the diversity of applicants for academic positions.

Value and Benefits

The value of the Fellowship shall be up to AU$16850 comprising of:

  • A contribution to a return economy class airfare to Canberra of up to AU$3,000. Fares for dependents and medical insurance will not be provided. Reimbursement for airfares will be paid on production of an invoice or a receipt from a travel agency.
  • A contribution towards rental accommodation of up to AU$8,000 (evidenced by receipts). Where possible, CASS will assist in sourcing on campus university accommodation or short-term accommodation nearby to campus for Fellows to allow them to participate fully in university activities and provide convenience for exploring the city.
  • A contribution towards the cost of visa application of up to AU$350 for the Fellow. This excludes costs for visa applications for dependents.
  • A contribution towards living expenses of AU$500 per week (net), pro-rated.
  • An additional payment of up to AU$1,000 will be made to contribute to the costs of childcare if required.
  • Access to University library and other relevant infrastructure including office space and computing facilities (if required).

Number of Fellows

Up to four Fellowships will be awarded.  The selection committee reserves the right to vary this as needed, if funding allows.

Criteria

  • Proposed Visiting Fellows must be currently employed at a higher education institution, or a research institute located in the Global South, on at least a 50% contract, and working primarily within the arts, humanities, or social sciences.

  • The fellows will be drawn from the disciplines that align with the areas of research strength in CASS and will be distributed across the College.
  • Fellowship placements will be tailored to align with the research interests and professional goals of the fellows. However, there needs to be demonstrated close alignment and collaboration with the nominator (the ‘Host’) affiliated with School/Centre at the College.
  • Preference will be given to research projects that clearly provide a summary of the benefits to the School/Centre, potential for further collaboration after the fellowship, and how the visit will promote diversity, inclusion and access.
  • Fellows are expected to contribute fully to the academic life of the host area.
  • The Fellowship travel period should conclude by 30 November of the year following award of the Fellowship.
