Higher Degree Research coursework
If you are a PhD or MPhil student in CASS, CASS HDR programs include a coursework milestone. HDR coursework provides academic and methodological training to qualify candidates for thesis work or its equivalent; to enhance diversity in the candidate’s scholarly competence; and to provide the support and structure required for students to complete high-quality HDR degrees within a reasonable timeframe.
To check the CASS HDR coursework requirements, please navigate to the Higher Degree Research tab below and select the area in which you are studying. Each area has a PDF that lists the coursework requirements by year. Usually you follow the coursework requirements for the year in which you commenced. However, if you wish to follow the requirements for a different year, or a different selection of courses, please discuss with your Chair of Panel. If you and your Chair wish to select courses that differ from the area lists, please email the CASS Student Office to apply for the relevant approvals.
HDR Coursework and Milestone results will appear on official transcripts. The coursework milestone for PhD students in CASS is set at the two-year mark from commencement (18 months for MPhil students); however, it is expected that students will complete their coursework in the first 12-18 months of candidature. The CASS Student Office marks off the coursework milestone at the end of each semester. If you have any questions about your coursework milestone, please email the CASS Student Office.
