Regional Studies

In today’s globalised world, the demand for regional expertise is greater than ever. In addition to its qualifications within our own Asia-Pacific region, the ANU has highly developed research centres examining issues of the ‘Western’ world. Regional Studies are interdisciplinary fields of research pertaining to particular global areas and their diasporas, utilising insights from international relations, history, political science, cultural studies, languages, geography, literature, and other related disciplines to shed light on their particular approaches to the world as a whole. A deeper dive into one or more of these regions means that students are able to acquire the skills that multi-disciplinary study offers.

Regional Studies at CASS encompass the fields of American Studies, European Studies and Middle East and Central Asian Studies. In taking a closer look at the hugely influential institutions that are the United States and European Union, students can expect to gain a keener awareness of how power operates in the present and where it has emerged from throughout the past. The ANU Centre for European Studies is a renowned platform for collaboration with partners overseas in Europe, meaning that students can pursue real-life connections with government and industry. The Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (The Middle East and Central Asia) is Australia's premier location for studies in this field, with a high international standing and links with its major counterparts in the Arab & Muslim world, as well as in North America and Europe. Furthermore, ANU’s expertise in the Latin American region affords students the opportunity to learn about the violent collision of cultures experienced there in recent times and how this can manifest in political management strategies when it comes to money and opinions.

The Middle East and Central Asian Studies belong to Area Studies or Regional Studies, which offer interdisciplinary and holistic understanding of these regions from various disciplinary perspectives such as political science, sociology, history, development studies and cultural studies. The Middle East and Central Asia are areas of important strategic interest to Australia and the world economically and politically.
