Independent study abroad

Study abroad is where you arrange your own independent overseas study and have it count towards your ANU degree. Study abroad is not a formal ANU program and, as such, students are not enrolled at ANU during their time abroad. Students need to arrange their own enrolment as international fee paying students at the host university and pay international fees directly to their host university and are responsible for any other costs associated with these experiences (Eg: entry, payment of fees, travel etc).

If a student who is intending on completing one of these courses wants to have that course credited back to their program at the ANU they are considered to be undertaking a study abroad experience.

You can go to any overseas tertiary institution – it is up to you – but it is usually better to go to exchange partner institutions as the credit equivalency has already been formulated.

Credit must be approved prior to the student undertaking the course, and it must be assessed to count in the student’s program. It is easier to get general arts elective credit, but students may apply for specific credit for majors, minors or program list courses. Each 6 units worth of credit at the ANU must be the equivalent in workload for the courses or combination of courses studied at the overseas institution.

Students must meet the eligibility requirements for the overseas institution. Each study abroad application is assessed on a case by case basis. Students should apply at least 2 - 3 weeks before they intend to undertake the study abroad experience. Students may be eligible for OS HELP.

If you are successful in your application, and for gaining credit from the experience, you will be enrolled in the placeholder course ARTS5999 – Cross institutional study in the semester you will be undertaking the course. This does not have a unit load, and you will receive an EE grade (‘Enrolled elsewhere’). Your grades from your Study Abroad program will not be listed on your ANU transcript.

Upon completion of your studies, please ensure that you obtain either an original or a certified copy of your official transcript from the host institution that clearly shows your result so that credit may be recorded. You may hand it in at the CASS Student Office, or send it as a PDF attachment. You will not obtain credit if you have completed courses other than those listed on the course approval letter.
