Yonatan obtained a PhD in Economics from the University of Otago in 2018. Prior to that he completed a master’s in International and Development Economics at the Australian National University. Yonatan worked as a teaching fellow for seven years at the Department of Economics at Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia. Apart from teaching undergraduate courses, he was involved in preparing interactive teaching modules for distance learners and advising students on appropriate research topics. Yonatan also served as head of the department from 2009 to 2011. During his tenure, he oversaw all aspects of academic and administrative activities in the department, including research and teaching strategy, curriculum development, budgeting and recruitment. At the University of Otago, Yonatan was entrusted with teaching introductory econometrics and tutoring several other economics courses. Yonatan’s research interests lie in the areas of human development, development economics and applied microeconomics.
