What's wrong with ANZAC?

Professor Joan Beaumont (Dean of Education, ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences) will chair the public debate between controversial book author Mark McKenna and Ian Hodges of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.

This debate will be held on Monday 19 April, 8-9pm, Ursula Hall Common Common Room. This event is free and open to the public.

Mark McKenna’s book What’s Wrong with ANZAC argues that for several years, Australia has seen the relentless militarisation of our history particularly through the commemoration of war.

What’s wrong with ANZAC? Has Australian history been militarized? is presented by the ANU History Learning Community (HLC).

The speakers for this public debate are Mark McKenna and Ian Hodge. Mark McKenna is the Associate Professor of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Sydney. He is one of the authors of What's wrong with ANZAC? and has written a number of books including This Country: A Reconciled Republic? Ian Hodges is a historian in the Department of Veterans' Affairs. He holds degrees in Asian Studies and history from the ANU and was employed as an historian at the Australian War Memorial.

The chair is Professor Joan Beaumont, Dean of Education at the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences. She is a regular commentator on television about history of Australia at war and is a Senior Fellow of Ursula Hall.
