The ANU School of Music recently hosted 30 students from Republic Polytechnic, Singapore, who were on a whirlwind visit to Australia.

The students, who are all studying for a Diploma in Sonic Arts back home, enjoyed a tour of the School of Music, School of Art, and were given a taste of what living in Canberra and studying at the ANU might be like.

Graduating student Jaye, on her first trip to Australia, said visiting Canberra had made her seriously consider coming to the ANU to study at the School of Music.

“I would like to continue sound design studies,” she said.

“My brother studied sound design in the US, at Bob Jones University in South Carolina,” she continued.

“He’s now a producer in a production house and I want to follow in his footsteps.”

Visiting group leader, Republic Polytechnic lecturer Julia Sim, hadn’t previously been to Australia, either.

“I think for about half the students, it’s their first time in Australia.”

Having been briefed about the School of Music’s academic offerings and toured the School’s Llewellyn Hall, Music technology lab and recording studio, Julia remarked that the School’s programs seemed well balanced and the facilities state-of-the-art.

“There’s quite a lot of variety and a complete line of music courses,” she said.

“Sam [Bennett] has also been very patient and welcoming.”

Music’s Associate Professor, Dr Samantha Bennett, and School of Art Lecturer Kit Devine facilitated Republic Polytechnic’s visit.

“This has been a very successful visit. Republic Polytechnic has great students, a dynamic curriculum and is one of Singapore’s creative hubs,” Dr Bennett said.

“We were delighted to host Republic Polytechnic’s visit and I look forward to seeing their students at ANU in 2017 and beyond.”
