School of Music alumni wins ARIA

Former ANU student Sally Whitwell was awarded the 2011 ARIA for Best Classical Album for her first recital disc on ABC Classics, Mad Rush.
The album is a collection of solo works by the American minimalist composer Philip Glass. Ms Whitewell, a first time nominee, won the award ahead of more well known artists including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, and Karin Schaupp.
The album by the Sydney based pianist was well received amongst listeners from both traditional classical and alternative music circles.
Whitwell and ABC Classics are currently preparing a follow-up release which will be of a similar style to her award winning debut. It will include music by Yann Tiersen and at least one original composition by Whitwell herself.
Whitwell said after the win that she “never really anticipated that my little abstract minimalist offering to the world would have the kind of impact it’s enjoyed”.
The ARIA awards are recognition of excellence and innovation across all genres of Australian music.
