Professor Anna Wierzbicka receives the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit

Professor Anna Wierzbicka, from the School of Language Studies, was awarded with the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit on Friday 9 November 2012 at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland. This is an award of the President of Poland, Mr Bronislaw Komorowski.

Professor Anna Wierzbicka is a Professor in the Linguistics Program within the School of Language Studies. In her 1972 book “Semantic Primitives” she launched a theory now known under the acronym “NSM” (Natural Semantic Metalanguage), which is now internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading theories of language and meaning. This approach has been used in hundreds of semantic studies across many languages and cultures.
