Four New Professorial Appointments in the College of Arts and Social Sciences

The academic excellence and diversity of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at The Australian National University continues to grow with the appointment of four new professorial staff to join the College in the second half of 2009.

Professor Adam Graycar has been awarded the Chair in Policy Innovation.  Professor Graycar is currently Dean and Professor for the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University, New Jersey and previously was the Head of the Cabinet Office for the South Australian Government (2003-2007) and Director of the Australia Institute of Criminology (1994-2003).He holds a BA (Hons), PhD (Political Science/Public Policy) and Doctorate of Letters from the University of New South Wales.
 
Professor Stewart Lockie will join the Sociology discipline of the College in mid 2009.  Professor Lockie is currently an Associate Professor in Sociology at Central Queensland University where he holds a number of research, teaching and management posts.  Professor Lockie completed his PhD at Charles Sturt University and has a Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of Western Sydney. 
 
Dr Penelope Mathew joins the College as the Freilich Foundation Chair.  Dr Mathew is currently a Visiting Professor and Interim Director for the Program in Refugee Law and Asylum at the University of Michigan.  Prior to this appointment, Dr Mathew was a Legal and Policy Advisor for the Human Rights Commission (ACT).  Dr Mathew holds a BA (Hons)/LLB from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Law and Doctor of the Science of Law (JSD) from Columbia University. 
  
Professor Angela Woollacott has been awarded the Manning Clark Chair of History and will join the ANU in Semester 2, 2009.  Professor Woollacott is currently a Professor of Modern History at Macquarie University and has acted as the Department Head whilst also being a prodigious researcher and publisher in various areas of Gender Studies.  Professor graduated from the ANU with BA before completing her Masters and PhD at the University of California.
