DECRA Success for History and Healthcare Communication Researchers

The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences congratulates two outstanding reseachers who have been received Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards (DECRAs).

Dr Laura Rademaker from the School of History and Dr Maria Dahm from the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics each received one of the highly competeive grants from the Australian Research Council to support their projects.

Dr Rademaker's project entitled Self-determination for Indigenous Australia: histories, visions and voice will explore the experiences of self-determination in First Nations peoples of the Northern Territory. Using her significant experience working with First Nations communities, the project aims to reveal new historical insights and develop innovative methods for community-based collaborative research.

Dr Dahm's project is titled Addressing the challenge of communicating uncertainty in diagnosis aims to examine the critical role and impact of communication on the diagnostic process in health settings, and the pervasive existence of uncertainty in communication. Dr Dahm works with the Institute for Communications in Healthcare at ANU founded in 2018. An international, interdisciplinary research institute, ICH works to understand the critical role communication plays in patient safety and quality of care in a variety of different healthcare settings. Dr Dahm's project will deliver outcomes that informs policy changes, and improves diagnostic communication and health services efficiency.
