College unites for model conference
The Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference (AMUNC) was held in Canberra last week. The conference brought together over 600 of the brightest young minds from the Asia-Pacific region. The students formed various UN bodies and engaged in dialogue on a number of internationally significant issues.
This was the first year that AMUNC has ever been held in the nation's capital. Now in its 17th year, AMUNC has developed a reputation as one of the premier events in the region for aspiring young leaders. With 25 bodies of the United Nations being simulated, the event went for seven days and involved a model UN, five speaker events, a week-long social events program, and a careers fair.
The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) was involved in the this event in numerous ways. Dr Ben Wellings and Dr Hayley Stevenson from the School of Politics and International Relations were involved in briefing different AMUNC committees and participating in debates.
CASS staff were also involved in the careers fair and were able to speak to AMUNC members about the benefits of studying Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at ANU. After experiencing the facilities at ANU and listening to some of the College's top teaching staff, many students expressed interest in pursuing further study at ANU.
