CASS annual staff awards
Several College academic and administrative staff were acknowledged for their work at the 2010 CASS Christmas party. Nine awards were handed out in total ranging from recognition of academic supervision to leadership.
Teaching and Learning Awards 2010
Dr Kim Huynh from the School of Politics and International Relations was one of two recipients of the Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr Huynh was recognised for his commitment and genuine interest in students. Dr Huynh received this award as a result of his ability to inspire and motivate his students. He has given highly detailed and constructive feedback for all assessment items and related content to students' own experiences using creative analogies and comparisons.
The other recipient of this award was Dr Johanna Rendle-Short from the School of Language Studies. Dr Rendle-Short was recognised for her commitment to innovation and continual improvement. In Semester 2, 2010, Johanna supplemented lecture/class content with digital audiovisual lessons (additionally to DLD recordings) made available through Wattle.
The Award for Excellence in Supervision went to Dr Alastair Grieg
from the School of Sociology. Dr Grieg was acknowledged for his extraordinary commitment to students including his focus on 'mentoring' rather than 'supervising'. He also received this award as a result of his support of students' academic development holistically by helping them to manage their career development, networks, publications, and managing study with personal life.
Lisa Clunie from the School of Art was this year's recipient of the Award for Excellence in Teaching. Lisa is a highly passionate and approachable Tutor. She was recognised for fostering a community of practice and encouragement of independent learning using stimulating activities, content, and innovative tools. This award was also recognition of her work building learning networks using cross-institutional collaborations with students from New Zealand.

ent to joint recipients for 2010. Dr Sally May and Dr Sandy Blair from the Institute of Professional Practice in Heritage and the Arts (IPPHA) were recognised for their successful broadening of CASS and the University's collaborations with external organisations. Their program exemplifies how successful collaborations can be formed to benefit staff and students at ANU and demonstrates flexible delivery of courses within a program. Participants in their program gained privileged access to Australian Heritage sites and pathways to internships in national parks to benefit their research and professional development.
Staff Awards 2010
The Customer Service and Administration Award went to Matthew Talbott as a result of his exceptional work within the Finance Team and his high quality service skills. His colleagues believe him to be the glue of the processing team, shaping the team into a well organised and efficient unit. This recognition was also as a result of the many successful innovations he has implemented including a number of new processes and systems. These new processes and systems have improved the efficiency and effectiveness and have solved some long time outstanding problems for the Finance Team.
Dr Patrick Guinness received the Award for Best Boss. Dr Guinness was nominated by both academic and general staff. His staff noted that he is a caring and considerate leader, acknowledging the variety of pressures placed on each staff member at different times of the year. According to his staff, he has been an outstanding Head of the School of Archaeology and Anthropology.
The Award for Best Mentor was given to Professor Gillian Russell. Gillian was nominated by a number of staff in the School of Cultural Inquiry because of her outstanding mentorship of staff and postgraduate students. As a PhD supervisor she has provided unfailing support and encouragement for her students. As a mentor to staff she has taken time to discuss issues, read draft material, and offer advice on a broad range of topics.
