Arts Alumni and former research school director recognised in 2016 Queen’s Birthday honours list

Five Arts alumni of The Australian National University (ANU) and a former Director of its Research School of Social Sciences (RSSS) have been recognised in the latest Queen’s Birthday Honours list for their contributions to Australia.

Laureate Professor Alan Lopez (PhD ’79) was named a Companion in the Order of Australia (AC) for his role as a science academic, researcher and author, and to the advancement of planning and policy development to improve public health in developing countries.

Dr Emma Leslie (BA ’93) was named a Member in the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to science, particularly chemistry, as an academic and researcher, to tertiary education, and to professional groups.

Bill Daniels (BA ’74) was also named a Member in the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to education as an advocate for the independent schools sector, and to public administration.

Alasdair Roy (BA ‘84, GradDipSc ’85) received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to children and young people through advocacy roles.

Philippa Lynch (BA ‘79, LLB Hons ’81) received the Public Service Medal (PSM) for her outstanding public service through the delivery of whole-of-government legal policy and governance advice.

Professor Adam Graycar, a former Professor of Public Policy and Director of the RSSS between 2010 and 2014, was named a Member in the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to tertiary education as an academic, to public administration through a range of leadership roles, and to professional groups.

He is also a former Dean of the university’s Australian National Institute of Public Policy between 2010 and 2012 and its Transnational Research Institute on Corruption. Professor Graycar was Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology between 1994 and 2003.

Professor Graycar has had long experience in policy making, research, and research management at the most senior levels in Australia. He has also represented Australia in various international fora, including the OECD and UN.

He has held visiting professor posts at University of California Berkeley, University of London, Yale University, University of Hong Kong and National University of Singapore. He has two doctorates from UNSW, is the author of some 200 scholarly publications, and is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Professor Graycar is now a Strategic Professor in Flinders University’s School of Social and Policy Studies.

Separately, a former Dean of Arts at ANU has been named the next Vice Chancellor of Southern Cross University in Lismore.

Professor Adam Shoemaker will begin the role in September 2016.
