The ANU community is deeply saddened by the death of artist, entrepreneur and Alumnus Robert Foster.
Mr Foster graduated from ANU with a BA (Visual) in 1985 and a GradDipArt (Visual) in 1986 and maintained strong links with the University, with many School of Art students receiving internships and mentoring through his studio.
Mr Foster was known around the world for his iconic curved F!nk water jug.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt led the tributes to Mr Foster and said he was an outstanding artist and designer who also had the skills to set up and manage a successful business.
"Robert was a great friend of the University," Professor Schmidt said.
"Robert's works are a testament to his creativity. It is fitting that his work can be found in major collections in Australia and overseas, including the National Gallery of Australia, at Parliament House, and of course here at ANU.
"On behalf of the University, I offer my sincere condolences to Robert's family and his many friends."
Head of the ANU School of Art, Associate Professor Denise Ferris, said Mr Foster was "a top bloke".
"His diverse understanding of process, his knowledge of materials and his constant need to challenge visual language have made him one of the most notable contemporary designer makers," she said.
"Everyone who knows design recognises a F!NK Jug."
In recognition of his achievements and contribution to the University, Mr Foster was named joint winner of the 2015 ANU Alumnus of the Year for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
