In December last year, PhD student Madeleine Penman represented the Australian National Centre for Latin American Studies (ANCLAS) in Seoul as a delegate at the Youth Summit of the Forum for East Asian and Latin American Cooperation (FEALAC).

Madeleine presented a speech on the implications of Australian and Asian mining in Latin America, an issue of relevance to her PhD research. Her attendance at the summit helped to build on ANCLAS’ and the University’s strategic links within the region and beyond.
FEALAC, which was established through a series of meetings in 2004 and 2007, is a forum of cooperation for 36 countries across both regions. A number of joint projects are funded under FEALAC and the forum meets on a regular basis at different levels, from the Ministerial level down.
The recent youth summit was held from 3-6 December in Seoul, South Korea, with the purpose of strengthening cooperation between East Asia and Latin America and establishing a network of future leaders.
The Summit brought together university students from Australia, Japan, the Philippines, China, Thailand, Korea, Indonesia, Paraguay, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Brazil and Chile in order to exchange perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in their countries and regions.
