ADSRI PhD scholarship - applications open

Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI) PhD Scholarship available with the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute.

Applications are now open for a 3-year APAI PhD scholarship within the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute (ADSRI) at the ANU. The scholarship is funded by a multidisciplinary Australian Research Council Linkage grant titled “Changes in payments, family dynamics and wellbeing following major child support reform: a longitudinal investigation of behavioural and attitudinal responses”.

An Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI) scholarship of $26,140 per annum (tax exempt, indexed annually) is available for three years.

This research project aims to explore the impacts of the new Australian Child Support Scheme on families. The study is based on a cross-sequential research design, involving computer-assisted telephone interviews at three points in time.

Areas of possible research for doctoral study include:

  • post-separation parenting
  • post-separation financial arrangements
  • changes in family structure
  • repartnering
  • bargaining and negotiation
  • family dynamics
  • family wellbeing

The breadth and depth of the data afford many possibilities.

While this ARC project commenced in May 2009, the scholarship has been deferred until this year so that the doctoral candidate can make use of both pre- and post-reform panel data.

Applicants wishing to pursue a PhD as part of this multidisciplinary project are sought in any of the following fields:

  1. Demography
  2. Psychology
  3. Sociology
  4. Economics
  5. Socio-legal studies (family law)
  6. Or a combination of these fields

Applicants must hold either a First Class Honours Degree, a Master Degree in a social science, or equivalent qualification. A quantitative background in one of the above fields is highly desirable, as is evidence of research excellence.

An Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI) scholarship of $26,140 per annum (tax exempt, indexed annually) is available for three years.

Applications close at 5pm, 18 June 2010.
