Top students from the ANU School of Music competed in the 2015 Friends Ensemble Music Prizes on 19 November. Prizes were awarded in two genres of music: Chamber, and Jazz and Contemporary.
PhD Music student Andrew Blanch took the first prize Chamber Music Award with his duo partner Callum Henshaw. The two have been playing as a duo for a couple of years, although they started off as a quartet with two other former students who have since gone on to play music overseas.
Andrew says that he and Callum were thrilled to have won the prize, but was very sportmanlike in describing the competition.
"You just get up and play your best," he says. "The other ensemble got the People's Choice award, which is just as important if not more than what the judges think you should have."
