Panel Discussion: The Local and Global Trade Policy Implications of Brexit

The University of Adelaide's EU Centre for Global Affairs and The Australian National University's Centre for European Studies are collaborating to bring visiting international trade policy experts to Canberra for a high-level panel discussion on: The Local and Global Trade Policy Implications of Brexit.

About the speakers

Alan Winters is Professor of Economics at the University of Sussex, Director of the UK Trade Policy Observatory and CEO of the Migrating Out of Poverty Research Program Consortium. He is a Research Fellow and Former Program Director of the CEPR London and a Fellow of IZA, Munich. From 2008 to 2011 Professor Winters was Chief Economist at the UK Department for International Development. He was also Director of the Developing Research Group of the World Bank from 2004 to 2007. Professor Winters has held academic appointments at the Universities of Cambridge, Bristol, Bangor and Birmingham. He was formerly Editor of the World Bank Economic Review, Associate Editor of the Economic Journal and is currently Editor of The World Trade Review. He chairs the Global Development Network and the Research Committee of the UK Economic and Social Research Council. He has advised the OECD, DFID, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the European Commission, the European Parliament, UNCTAD, the WTO and IADB.  Professor Winters was made a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath in June 2012. A leading specialist on the empirical and policy analysis of international trade, especially in developing countries, he has published over 240 articles and chapters and 30 books covering regional trading arrangements, non-tariff barriers, European integration, transition economies’ trade, international labour migration, agricultural protection, trade and poverty and the world trading system. Most recently he has worked on migration, the brain drain and economic growth. The UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO) is a partnership between Chatham House and the University of Sussex, widely recognised as having the UK’s foremost collection of experts in international trade and uniquely positioned to comment on and analyse trade policy proposals in the wake of Brexit. The UKTPO offers independent expert advice to assist in addressing the critical international trade challenges posed by the UK’s exit from the EU. For over 4 decades, the EU has managed a great deal of international trade policy on behalf of the UK. The UKTPO is committed to engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders to ensure that the UK’s international trading environment is reconstructed in a manner that benefits all in Britain and is fair to Britain, the EU and the world.

Richard Baldwin is Professor of International Economics at the Graduate Institute, Geneva and President of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) London since 2014. He is a Senior Editor of Economic Policy and has held the position of Founder and Editor-in-Chief of VoxEU since 2006. Professor Baldwin was a Senior Staff Economist for the President’s Council of Economic Advisors in the Bush Administration (1990-1991) following Uruguay Round, NAFTA and EAI negotiations as well as numerous US-Japan trade issues, including the SII talks and the Semiconductor Agreement renewal. He was Co-Managing Editor of Economic Policy from 2000 to 2005 and Program Director of CEPR’s International Trade Programme from 1991 to 2001. Professor Baldwin has held a number of prestigious academic roles, including Visiting Research Professor at the University of Oxford from 2012 to 2015 and Visiting Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2002-2003.  Prior to these appointments he was Associate Professor at Columbia University Business School from 1986-1989. He has also worked as a consultant for numerous governments, the European Commission, OECD, World Bank, EFTA and USAID. The author of numerous books and articles, most recently The Great Convergence: Information Technology and the New Globalization, his research interests include international trade, globalisation, regionalism and European integration. 

Kym Anderson is the George Gollin Professor of Economics, foundation Executive Director of the Wine Economics Research Centre, and formerly foundation Executive Director of the Centre for International Economic Studies at The University of Adelaide, where he has been affiliated since 1984. Previously he was a Research Fellow in Economics at ANU's Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies (1977-83), following undergraduate studies at the University of New England in Armidale (1967-70), part-time Masters studies at The University of Adelaide (1971-74) while working in the S.A. Department of Agriculture in Adelaide, and doctoral studies at the University of Chicago and Stanford University (1974-77). In 2012 he re-joined the Australian National University part-time as a Professor of Economics in the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics within the Crawford School of Public Policy.  Professor Anderson is on the Board of several international academic journals, including the Journal of International Economic Law and as Co-Editor of the Journal of Wine Economics. In 2014 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Economics by the University of Adelaide, and in June 2015 he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC).
