Facts alone are not enough

Why is it that people smoke, infant formula is readily available, eleven million hens producing eggs live in battery cages and cattle and sheep are exported for slaughter overseas? The evidence of the harm or suffering in each area is overwhelming. While evidence must be the foundation of advocacy, there are many political, economic and cultural barriers to be negotiated to enable change. The discussion in this Intersections seminar will explore the importance of facts, the hurdles we must overcome and the building blocks that can stimulate positive policy, behaviour and attitudinal change. The RegNet Intersections seminar series was created to help expand collaborations between researchers, politicians, policymakers and practitioners. The series aims to provide a platform to discuss the realities of government, political life, policymaking and policy implementation and how researchers can effectively negotiate these spheres. About the Speaker Heather Neil was appointed Chief Executive Officer of RSPCA Australia in 2006. She has a long career in the not-for-profit sector including organisations such as the Australian Breastfeeding Association, Quit Tasmania and Croplife.
