Australian film premiere of Markus Imhoof's Eldorado

Film screening of Markus Imhoof's 'Eldorado' to celebrate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and reflect on its promise.

The Embassy of Switzerland, in partnership with the ANU Film Group, the ANU Law Reform & Social Justice, Amnesty International Australia and the ANU Centre for European Studies, celebrate Human Rights by hosting a film screening of Markus Imhoof’s Eldorado, a critically acclaimed film on challenges faced by refugees over the last 70 years.

Eldorado is a unique documentary drawing parallels between the perilous journeys refugees take to reach Europe today and Imhoof’s own childhood through Giovanna, a refugee child taken in by his family during World War II. Giovanna’s story is interwoven with 2017 testimonies from a number of African and Middle Eastern refugees. From the Italian warship saving desperate people from the sea to the camps where refugees are exploited by organised crime, each footage shot echoes yesterday’s tragedies of people whom basic human rights have been denied.

The ANU Film Group, ANU Law Reform & Social Justice, Amnesty International Australia, ANU Centre for European Studies unite their efforts with the Embassy of Switzerland to give a voice to the voiceless.

Doors open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start.

About the Venue

The ANU Film Group is very excited to announce that they have been working with the ANU over the past three years on the development of a purpose-built cinema that is intended as a new home for the ANU Film Group from February 2019 onwards.

The new theatre has been designed from the ground up for film viewing, rather than a lecture theatre that has been retrofitted. It features 300 cinema-style seats with high backs, arranged in a stadium-style configuration and at a gradient for optimal film viewing.

The new theatre forms part of the ANU’s new Kambri precinct, which is the redeveloped area formerly known as Union Court. The Kambri precinct represents the largest change to the ANU campus since its establishment, and will include a number of state-of-the-art new buildings and facilities.

Directions: The ANU Film Group is located on the ground floor of the Cultural Centre within the new Kambri Precinct of the ANU in Canberra. It can be found as Building 153 on any ANU Campus maps.

Parking: There are 400 underground parking spots below the building, which is operated by Care Park. There is also ample parking near the cinema, which is free at the time of our screenings. All parking spots are less than five minutes' walk away.
