Fit for Purpose: Artists and Anthropogenic Climate Change
Bride Lonie, New Zealand art theorist, speaks about climate change and the role of the artist in communicating subsequent environmental and social issues. This presentation starts with the premise that the audience’s understanding of and preparedness to accept the notion of anthropogenic climate change plays a large part in the reception of the artwork and its efficacy.
It considers a range of approaches from the instrumental to the phenomenological and discusses the different functions of each approach. It argues that anthropogenic climate change has had many implications for artists. Bridie Lonie (MA Art History and Theory; Emeritus Member of Otago Polytechnic) is currently working on a PhD in Art History at the University of Otago, Closer Relations: Artists, Climate Change and Interdisciplinarity.
