Where is Australian art history happening?
Presented by Nick Mitzevich, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, this keynote considers the role of exhibitions and collection displays in presenting Australian art histories.
Mitzevich poses the questions - is it through exhibition making that art history happens and can collection displays enable radical acts of revisioning history?
Framed around a series of exhibition and collection-based case studies, Mitzevich will consider how histories are made manifest on Gallery walls and explore the implications of these reconstructions and revisions for art museums and their burgeoning audiences.
Biography
Nick Mitzevich has served since 2010 as the director of the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, where he has led numerous initiatives, including a diverse artistic program, significant attendance growth, the revitalisation of the building and its displays, and the expansion of community engagement.
Previously, Nick Mitzevich was the Director of the University of Queensland Art Museum in Brisbane, and Newcastle Region Art Gallery in New South Wales. He holds a BA in Fine Art and Graduate Diplomas in Education and Fine Art from the University of Newcastle, New South Wales.
In 2009, he received the Museum and Gallery Services Queensland Outstanding Achievement Award and in 2016 was chosen to participate in the Global Museum Leaders Colloquium at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
