ANU African Studies Reading Group - Elections & Gender in Kenya

The ANU African Studies Reading Group focuses on elections and gender in Kenya this month, welcoming Dr. Christina Kenny from the University of New England.

Dr Kenny will lead a discussion based on several of her publications, "’She Grows to be Just a Woman, not a Leader’: Gendered Citizenship and the 2007 General Election in Kenya" and "’Women are not Ready to [Vote For] Their Own’: Remaking Democracy, Making Citizens after the 2007 Post-election Violence in Kenya."

About the presenter

Dr. Christina Kenny
is a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of New England, and works on human rights and development with a focus on colonial histories, gendered citizenship, and gender and sexuality rights in the Global South. She has worked with a variety of human rights organisations in Australia and Africa, and her current research explores how the transnational movement for the protection and promotion of rights pertaining to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression have influenced the formation of queer identities and communities in Kenya.
