The Alchemists: Rediscovering Photography In the Age of the Jpeg, is a collaboration involving the Australian Centre for Photography, Australian National University and the University of Sydney, Sydney College of the Arts. Co-curated by Dr Martyn Jolly from the ANU School of Art, it opens at the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney on 30 October and runs until 6 December. This international survey of current photographers who explore the optical and chemical fundamentals of the medium features the ANU School of Art graduates Lisa Clunie, Lucinda Eva-May and Matt Higgins, as well as current PhD students C J Taylor and Sawit Prasertphan. In association with the exhibition, the School, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Australia and the eminent photography historian Professor Geoffrey Batchen, will hold a master class with photographers from Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia on 7 November. Participants will examine iconic works from the NGA’s photographic collection and then experiment with digital contact negatives and alternative processes in the School of Art’s darkrooms and digital laboratories.
