Music at ANU

All students receive a broad core training in music theory and aural skills, and an overview of the historical and social context of music with a focus on music written after 1900.

You can specialise in one of our five majors:

  • Performance
  • Composition
  • Composition for Film and Video Games
  • Music technology
  • Musicology

You will have the opportunity to explore the genres of classical, jazz, contemporary, popular and world music as well as the intersections of these genres with the technologies of electronic music, audio recording and multimedia.

The School of Music offers generous one-to-one teaching allocations for undergraduate Performance majors, and a host of workshop opportunities for composition students. You will also have access to magnificent purpose-built facilities including Llewellyn Hall, which regularly hosts concerts by national and international soloists and ensembles, our brand new recording studio, a Yil Lull Indigenous recording studio, a range of post-production facilities, a Pro Tools/Logic lab, and an ambisonic performance space. Today, music inhabits most of our waking hours, whether that be through the internet, car radios, mobile phones, concerts, film scores, advertising or dance clubs. As information technology has made the world smaller, the opportunities for the creation and dissemination of music have increased exponentially and demand for a new kind of performer and composer has risen.

Our students graduate with a range of professional skills that are applicable to careers in performance, multimedia composition, electronic music, audio recording, music education, sound design, academic research, music entrepreneurship, and digital media and technology.
