How to read your results
ANU uses a grading scale to record your academic progress. There are two main types of grades: final grades and interim grades. Some common grades that might indicate a problem, and that you need to understand, are explained below.
Final grades. These are for results that will appear on your final transcript when you graduate. If you receive one of these grades for course is compulsory in your degree or major/minor you will have to retake the course or change your degree or major/minor. Final grades are used to calculate your Grade Point Average (GPA).
N - Fail You failed because your final mark was a score between 0% and 49%. This grade will count towards your GPA and is worth 0.
NCN - Not completed/Fail You failed because you did not complete the course to according to the rules. For example you did not submit required assessment tasks, attend required examinations, pass to a published agreed minimum level (a so-called ‘hurdle’)]. This grade will count towards your GPA and is worth 0.
WN - Withdrawn with failure This grade will count towards your GPA and is worth 0.
WD - Withdrawn without failure You withdrew from your course after Census date but before deadline to drop a course without failure (normally on or before Friday of Week 9). This grade will not count towards your GPA.
WL - Withdrawn late without failure You applied to withdraw from your course after the deadline to drop a course without failure but were approved to do so. This grade will not count towards your GPA.
Interim grades. These are for results that are still ‘in progress’ they will subsequently be replaced by a final grade. Interim grades always need your close attention.
DA - Deferred assessment You have been granted a late submission date for one or more assessment tasks. You must submit these tasks by the agreed due date, or be granted an extension to your DA, or you will fail the tasks with the subsequent course result becoming your final grade.
PX - Offered supplementary assessment You scored between 45% and 49% in your course and will be given a chance to submit another assessment task or sit another examination. If you pass this new assessment, your final grade will become PS (worth 4 in your GPA); if you do not pass this new assessment, your final grade will become NCN (worth 0 in your GPA).
RP - Result pending You have submitted assessment that has not yet been marked. Once it has been marked and the final result for the course has been approved you will receive an updated grade.
