Review - ANU Centre for European Studies

Introduction

The ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences will be undertaking a review of the ANU Centre for European Studies in October 2012. The review is a periodic review that occurs to all ANU academic centres in accordance with the ANU policy on Reviews of Academic and Central Administrative Areas. This will be the first review undertaken of the ANU Centre for European Studies since its establishment.

Background

The ANU Centre for European Studies (ANUCES) is an academic centre within the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences.

Europe occupies an important place on the research and teaching agenda of The Australian National University. ANUCES has been established to provide a focus for the University’s commitment to European Studies.

The Centre engages the talents of hundreds of researchers, teachers and students working on Europe on a single platform. Its purpose is to create synergies, promote interdisciplinary dialogue, and generate collaborative research projects at home and abroad.

The Centre is funded jointly by the ANU and a European Commission grant.

Terms of Reference

A review of the ANU Centre for European Studies will be conducted in accordance with the following terms of reference.

The review will consider and evaluate:

  1. Whether the ANUCES is positioned to ensure its continuing excellence and sustainability in creating synergies, promoting interdisciplinary dialogue, and generating collaborative research projects at home and abroad;
  2. The effectiveness of ANUCES in promoting and enabling educational activities focused on European Studies;
  3. The appropriateness of the organisational structure of ANUCES within the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences to achieve its overall strategic objectives and maintain long term sustainability;
  4. How effective the international linkages of the ANUCES are; and
  5. The continued relevance of the ANUCES to achieving the strategic objectives contained in ANU by 2020 and the CASS Operational Plan.

Review Panel

The review panel will be comprised of:

  • Professor Toni Makkai, Dean of ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences
  • Professor Fiona Wheeler, ANU College of Law
  • Professor Glen Withers, Crawford School of Public Policy, ANU

The review panel will be chaired by Professor Makkai.

The review panel will meet in person on at least one occasion to meet with various significant stakeholders of ANUCES. These meetings shall occur on Friday 12 October 2012.

Reporting & Secretariat Arrangements

The review panel will present its final written report to the Vice-Chancellor by no later than 9 November 2012.

The secretarial support for the review panel will be provided by the Centre Coordinator, Ms Jane Coultas. Secretarial support will include organisational arrangements for the review; prior preparation of data and other required information about ANUCES; and minute taker for the review.

Consultation

In undertaking the review, the panel will invite written submissions from interested stakeholders. These submissions should address the terms of reference listed above, and should be received by the secretariat on jane.coultas@anu.edu.au no later than Tuesday 2 October 2012. The review panel will meet with the Director of ANUCES and other significant stakeholders it feels appropriate to meet its terms of reference.

Review Report

The report of the review panel has been finalised and the recomendations have been accepted by the Vice-Chancellor. The report is now available online.
