Megan

I thought it would be great to be in the nation's capital with Parliament, national institutions and embassies at your fingertips. And I haven't been disappointed - it's been wonderful.

I'm in my third year of a double degree studying a Bachelor of International Relations and Bachelor of Laws, and I'm specialising in International Security and minoring in Mandarin.

I chose ANU because I knew that it was the best school for what I wanted to do - International Relations. I thought it would be great to be in the nation's capital with Parliament, national institutions and embassies at your fingertips. And I haven't been disappointed - it's been wonderful.

The academics that I get to meet are the best thing about my degree. If you email one of your teachers, they're always willing to chat. If you do a quick Google search on one of your lecturers, you're always amazed at what they've done.

I'm an American citizen raised in Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney. I did my first year of university in Beijing. Beijing is a really exciting city but Canberra is where I want to be for university. It's just far enough away from everything that you can make it yours and carve out your own path, but it's also close enough to family and friends that you never feel too far away.

I live at Burgmann College and it's the best community I've ever been part of. You never feel lonely here because you have this community and support network around you. When you have assessments or exams, your first take-home ... you're all in it together and that's incredibly affirming.

Without a doubt the best thing I've received from College are my friends. Being away from home and family is great but adds another layer of importance to your friendships. We're entering adulthood together; making decisions for the first time and watching each other grow. It's really special.

I would tell prospective students thinking about ANU to just do it. You won't be disappointed! The other day I was looking at potential exchange schools thinking 'What would I like to study that's not offered at ANU?'  I would find a course and think 'Oh that sounds fantastic!' But then I'd come back to the ANU website and see that 'Ah, we have an institute for that here too!' Canberra may be a small city but there are no limits to the opportunities ANU offers.
