The ANU School of Sociology welcomes Professor Celia Roberts as its new Head of School. Professor Roberts commenced in the role on 1 July 2026. 

A leading scholar of gender and the social studies of science and technology, Professor Roberts joined ANU in 2018. Her research spans embodiment, health, reproduction and biotechnology, and she has a strong record of international leadership in these fields. 

The School also warmly thanks Associate Professor Gavin Smith for his highly valued contributions during his three years as Head of School. His steady and collaborative leadership strengthened the School’s research and education activities, and he guided the School through a highly successful external review in 2024.
