Gallery of Small Things: 4th Emerging Artist Support Scheme show
GOST portrait of Jonathon Zalakos by Tracey Nearmy
Gallery of Small Things (GOST) is hosting its 4th Emerging Artist Support Scheme (EASS) show with awardees from the ANU School of Art & Design. This continued relationship ensures winners of the GOST award can showcase new works and be introduced to Canberra audiences in the following year after their graduating exhibition.
Gallery Director Anne Masters explains, “As a recipient of an EASS award in Ceramics from the ANU School of Art, this opened doors for me to access a studio, kilns and technical knowledge enabling me to kick start my career as a professional practicing artist. I believe in paying it forward and providing opportunities for like minded visual arts graduates to exhibit new works while understanding how galleries operate.”
We selected Alicia Cox (Ceramics workshop), Janet Jeffs (Painting Workshop) and Jonathon Zalakos (Gold & Silversmithing workshop) as the awardees to have a group show at GOST.
“All three artists have created a new body of work each which means audiences will have access to new and exciting pieces to kick off their art collection with very affordable prices. Ceramics is still enduring to this day with a number of institutions including Museum of Brisbane and the Australian Design Centre in Sydney showcasing significant ceramic exhibitions and travelling shows,” Anne says.
Alicia Cox has created a series of glazed slip cast porcelain patter sets and cups. Alicia says, “… I predominantly work with slip cast porcelain exploring themes of gender and the domestic experience through the subversion of familiar household objects … however, I decided to diverge from my usual work to combine my love of tea and snacks. I wanted to create a more functional art object in which the user can allow themselves to take a moment to just enjoy”.
Janet Jeffs has created a series of paintings “Sky 1 - 6 … in a grid in a grid pattern to suggest a view through a window. Sky is an exploration my embodied relationship with the natural world through gestural abstraction ... These works are painterly, almost filmic illusions of the sky. This comes from a lived experience of a rural home in Yuin country near the source of the Shoalhaven River ...”.
Jonathon Zalakos has created a series of brooches drawing on ‘… his integration of contemporary philosophy with traditional goldsmithing materials and techniques …’. He further says, “Through my work, I pursue a psychoanalytic understanding of objects and the disciplines concerned with producing them: Art, design and craft ...”.
The exhibition runs every day giving visitors longer to enjoy it’s small space (it’s less than 6 metres square!)
