Abstracting Space is a three-part workshop facilitated by ANU Ceramics visiting artist Utako Shindo (Japan) at Strathnairn Arts. Over three sessions, 10 participants will create a space together to exchange, explore and experiment with the material and spatial possibilities of clay, fire, and installation. This workshop will be underpinned by attention to the untranslatable - a key part of Utako's research in which processes, objects, gestures and traces are understood as existing poetically in intangible dialogue.
Day 1: Sunday 30th August , 9am - 1pm
Welcome to Country Ceremony followed by making of clay vessels on a banding wheel.
Day 2: Saturday 5th September, 10am - 5pm
Building a series of small, experimental wood fire kilns and firing clay vessels.
Day 3: Sunday 6th September, 10am - 2pm
Unpacking fired works and exploring space and dialogue through installation
Utako Shindo is an artist working internationally in the poetics of untranslatability. Her art embraces ‘transferring’ and ‘centering’ processes, into various forms such as drawing/painting and ceramics/sculpture, and together forming an installation work.
