Liang-Yu Chen
"It’s the place where I discover my potential with a group of talented people."
Liang-Yu Chen is an international student from Tainan, Taiwan currently studying a Bachelor of International Relations (BIR) at the Australian National University (ANU).
The decision to move wasn’t made lightly, Liang-Yu reflects, “I hesitated to study in Canberra because it’s not a traditional big city.”
Ultimately she brought a ticket to the ‘big country town’ due to the elusive "BIR degree, a rarity among leading Australian Universities.”
Liang-Yu has since remained pleased with her decision. Finding the faculty “kind”, “open to questions” and “happy to provide feedback.”
“After two terms, I had no reservations about my choice to study at ANU. Even through Canberra is a small city, it’s able to meet most everyday needs. Public transportation is particularly convenient – offering easy navigation around the city and suburbs. Canberra is also famous for its natural landscapes, which provide a refreshing respite from my studies. The city’s quieter atmosphere also fosters focus and reduces distractions, compared to larger cities.”
Liang-Yu has also immersed herself in several societies and clubs which she says has “enhanced university life significantly.”
“I am part of the International Relations Society and Defence and Strategy study group which host many interesting events. These activities provide invaluable support to my academic pursuits and help me navigate my career path. I am also apart of a cultural society where I help organise and meet up with people who are from the same culture as me.”
Speaking enthusiastically of the writing centre, Liang-Yu also says, “My learning experience has benefited from leaning on the centre’s service. I can book an appointment to receive feedback on my essays, with the writing coach helping me improve my academic writing."
Adding, the on campus services are also “convenient.”
“You can book an appointment with the doctor based right on campus. The school also offers consultation where you can seek mental health services. And if it’s booked out, you can call the 24/7 support hotline in case of emergency. Overall, ANU takes care of student’s physical and mental health."
Liang-Yu also lives on campus in Davey Lodges, among a “supportive community.”
"In my lodge, there will be various events from time to time for you to meet and chat with new people who share similar experiences as you. My senior resident constantly checks on me to see if I am facing any problems at school or personally, which makes me feel warm. I also like to the location of the lodges which is close to most of the main school buildings and is a walkable distance to city."
Liang-Yu says "since moving to Canberra, I have access to numerous opportunities. I am intending to apply for an internship in later years of study. It’s the place where I discover my potential with a group of talented people."
