I was originally interested in the establishment of the National Security College. I started by enrolling in the Certificate in National Security Policy but saw the benefit in rolling in to the Master's degree at the end of my first year. That was 2011.

I completed my Master of Studies based on National Security Policy in 2012. During the course of my studies I discovered a range of subjects which engaged my interest. The Master of Globalisation gave me the opportunity to follow a line of study which incorporated these courses and focused on my interest in migration studies.

Over the course of my study the Master of Globalisation has given me the opportunity to gain a broader and deeper understanding of my own area of expertise. Postgraduate study has developed my skills at research, critical thinking and the capacity to embark on larger and better structured written work products.

A couple of thoughts: Firstly, I was pleasantly surprised that it is not so difficult to start to study later in life. I have found going back to school to be stimulating and rewarding. Secondly, I had thought of philosophy, politics and public policy as being rather dry old subjects. My program has opened my mind to multiple disciplines. I never thought that I would be studying international law, anthropology, strategic studies or sociology. I have enjoyed them all.

I plan to engage in doctoral research and I am hoping to enroll to complete a PhD in Migration Studies. I have a particular interest in studying the drivers and effectiveness of public policy formulation in developed and developing nations.

The ANU is a top university. The Master of Globalisation core subjects and electives will give you enough flexibility to choose study in a diverse range of subject areas. You will have access to an incredible group of academics, in an incredible range of disciplines. I would urge you to seek out members of the academic staff or doctoral researchers and discuss the things that you are most passionate about studying. You will find some great thinkers and perhaps even friends for life.

My study has introduced me to the wide range of public lectures arranged by ANU for visiting experts. These have introduced me to a fascinating world of academic thought and opinion and the opportunity to engage with fellow students and alumni. My connection with the ANU will continue after my study is complete.
