ANU & your degree

Whilst in year 12 I spent a lot of time researching the ANU website to find courses that interested me. I chose to study German because I had been learning it all through high school and had been on a year long student exchange before I started university. There are four levels of German language courses offered at ANU. I started at the intermediate level in order to continue learning and revising as much grammar as I could. You climb through the levels progressively before being offered thematic courses in literature, film, translation etc. Learning German has been very rewarding, I have improved my oral and written skills tremendously and have made many friends in the program. I strongly recommend studying a language!   I chose to study the Contemporary Europe Major because I wanted to find a major that had fewer students and allowed me to include German. Many of the courses concern the meaning of Europe, the historical development of the European Union and contemporary issues in European politics. 

The ANU law program has a strong focus on constitutional and administrative law. I chose to study law because I thought it would be useful knowledge in whatever career path I choose. It also completes an Arts Degree very well. A strong background in English and/or Maths will give you many of the analytical and problem-solving skills you need to study law. There is also a wide range of law subjects, which means there is something to interest everyone.

I chose ANU… because it is in a fantastic student city, it has a very beautiful campus and offers great courses in my areas of interest. 

I chose my degree and major… because it combined my interests of German, history/politics and law. 

I would describe my program as… very personal, rewarding and offers a lot of opportunities to broaden your academic horizons.

Transition 

I found that the transition from High School to University… not very difficult. The academic standards were higher and I had to join clubs and societies to meet new people to join the fun activities on campus but the transition did not take very long.   

I adjusted to University by… getting familiar with the resources on campus, joining clubs and societies and applying myself to my studies.

Aspirations

After graduating, my ideal career is… something that combines all my interests, including German, politics and law. 

As a student

My average day as a student… is very busy. I am running between classes, doing homework and assignments and being active in clubs and societies.  I am involved in the ANU Community through ANU International Relations Society, ANU German Society and the Contemporary Europe Learning Community.

The most rewarding aspects of University so far has been…joining clubs and societies, meeting new people and learning a language. 

Advice

My advice to prospective students considering ANU… is to get familiar with all the on-campus facilities (including the various libraries, ANU Student Association, Academic Skills and Learning Centre etc) and get involved in clubs and societies on campus that interest you. 

My motto is…always give it your best.
