Jemima Adams

"I love studying art and the world around it, as well as business, it gives me two completely different experiences."

Jemima Adams will graduate with two vastly different Testamurs, one in Art History and Curatorship  (BAHCR) and the other, Business Administration  Business Administration (BBA) from the Australian National University (ANU).

“I love studying art and the world around it, as well as business, it gives me two completely different experiences.”

Jemima comments, “the FDD (Flexible Double Degree) offers lots of potential to open doors for me. ANU has a really strong art history and curatorship program, with courses that appealed to my curiosity about the world with the opportunity to explore a wider range of courses than other universities.”

She was happily surprised at the vastness of the degree that opened her up to, "a bunch of new skills, such as accounting, which I found myself really enjoying – that was a surprise!”

Adding, “I also found the breadth of study my fellow students were doing to be incredible, from law to political science, alongside their art history degrees.”

One of her favourite subjects has been Arth2174: Art, Medicine, Gender. “It was a course with such a broad range of students, so classes were really fun to hear everyone's different approaches, the content was engaging and fascinating. Think everything from pandemics to Frida Kahlo and wombs displayed as flowers and you get the right idea.”

Jemima moved from Melbourne and is enjoying the, “sheer number of events and opportunities in Canberra. Many institutions and organisations are based here, so if you look around there's always something to do or see. Just recently we’ve had the multicultural festival, enlighten and the lights on the lake.”

She is a student ambassador for the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) and has been a part of the Society of Arts and Social Sciences since her first year at ANU, serving as a representative in 2021 before becoming Publicity Officer in 2022. This year (2023), Jemima is proud to be President of the society.

“The society has an office in the A.D. Hope classics building and I love wandering through the museum and the surrounding showcases in that building. There's always something new that catches my eye and so many interesting corners in that building,” she says.

Jemima advises prospective students to “get involved with the wider community as much as possible at ANU." Discovering, "So many of the best opportunities that I've experienced have been through meeting people in the ANU community, and not just at college. Societies, volunteering and events all help, and you can always bring a friend or meet a few new people wherever you go on campus."
