The best part of my overseas experience was the immersion into Syrian culture. I really valued being able to use my developing skills to talk to people I would have otherwise not had access to.

I chose my program because I wanted to combine my love for painting with language study which would allow me to travel abroad.

I used the Ethel Tory Language Scholarship to study the ‘Applied Arabic’ program, a two-month intensive Arabic course conducted by the ANU in Aleppo, Syria.

The best part of my overseas experience was the immersion into Syrian culture. I really valued being able to use my developing skills to talk to people I would have otherwise not had access to and in this way experience Syrian culture first hand on the street and in people’s homes rather than mediated by a guide or translator.

My advice to prospective students considering applying for the Ethel Tory Language Scholarship is to go for it! In-country study is not only incredibly beneficial to language development, it's a great way to meet people and get travel experience in a particular area. The Ethel Tory Language Scholarship was an indispensable help for my trip and I would advise anyone undertaking language study abroad to apply for it
