Valerie Kirk awarded the ACT Arts Fellow Award for 2013

Valerie Kirk, distinguished visual artist and Head of Textiles at the ANU School of Art, has been awarded the prestigious ACT Creative Arts Fellowship for 2013, valued at $45,000. The fellowship not only recognises an artist’s achievement, but also provides opportunities for further career advancement.

As part of the fellowship Ms Kirk will be undertaking two projects, the first of which is a tapestry work of Nobel Prize winning astronomer Brian Schmidt.

Ms Kirk’s second project will be the creation of a tapestry to celebrate the Centenary of Canberra in 2013. As part of this project she will engage with the community and oversee the design and production of the tapestry.

Valerie Kirk:

“The Fellowship offers me a significant opportunity to further develop my artistic career and contribute to the community. I look forward to dedicated work in my studio and engagement with the community in the creation of a large scale tapestry to mark the centenary of Canberra.”

The fellowship will provide Ms Kirk with the opportunity to further enhance her professional and technical skills in the field of woven tapestry.
