The Swiss Ambassador with the 2015 Swiss Prize awardees

Essays on the Swiss national anthem and policies by the Swiss Government and their implications for the wider world have taken the top place in this year's Swiss Prize.

The winners were announced at a reception on Tuesday, hosted by the Ambassador of Switzerland His Excellency Mr Marcel Stutz and his wife Mrs Esther Stutz. ANU Vice Chancellor, Professor Ian Young, and ANU Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Marnie Hughes-Warrington, were also in attendance.

The Swiss Prize has been awarded since 1998 for students from the ANU School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics studying the three official languages of Switzerland: French, German and Italian. The prize is a longstanding collaboration between the Swiss Embassy in Australia and the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences.

His Excellency Mr Marcel Stutz spoke about language ability as an essential quality of being human. And in his speech, Professor Young reflected on his time in Germany at the Max Planck Institut fur Meteorologie in Hamburg where he cultivated his German language skills.

The winning essays all covered issues to do with Switzerland and its place in the world, from the scientific realm to trade ties.
