A great opportunity for students across The Australian National University (ANU) to showcase their creativity at ANU Film Festival presented by the Art School Collective, a student-run club.

The first ANU Film Festival will be hosted by the Arc Cinema at the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) and is inviting submissions from students across the University. The shortlisted entries will be premiered at the NFSA on 9 August 2023 at 6:30 pm.

“The film festival presents an opportunity for students to screen their work. The submissions could include short films created by the students for a video art course, experimental film course, animation course, film music course, screen studies course or something students have made purely as passion project. Submissions do not have to be made in 2023. There will be People’s Choice on the night too,” Lee-Francis Evatt, an Art School Collective committee member said.

“The event was created to connect the School of Art and Design and the School of Music with the broader University and allow for creative connections to be made through sharing work in real life.”

The judges for the event are Nathan Smith, Senior Curatorial Officer at the National Film and Sound Archive, Dr Kate Warren, Senior Lecturer, Art History and Curatorship from the Centre for Art History and Art Theory at ANU School of Art and Design and Dr Anna Madeleine Raupach, lecturer at the ANU School of Art & Design.

Winner of the Best Film will receive NFSA membership and a trophy made by Lee-Francis Evatt, a second year Bachelor of Visual Art student.

“As this is the first year of the festival, we encourage different types of entries and there is no particular theme. The only requirements are that the films have to be under eight minutes and of a resolution of at least 1080p. If submissions include people who don't go to ANU, this is allowed as long as at least two of the participants doing major roles (i.e, directing, writing, producing, sound design, main actor, costume and set design) are from ANU or one of the participants are doing two of these major roles is from ANU,” Lee-Francis Evatt added.

Submissions close at the midnight of 19 July. Students can submit their entries here.

Free tickets to the event are available on the NFSA website. You can book them here.
