School of Art shines at inaugural DESIGN Canberra Festival

In addition to a huge array of exhibitions and events during this year’s inaugural DESIGN Canberra Festival, ANU students and graduates won a number of prestigious awards during the four day festival.
Nellie Peoples, a recent graduate and current graduate in residence in the Gold & Silversmithing workshop, won the Designcraft: Craft + Design Award in the inaugural DESIGN Canberra Festival 2014.
Designcraft awarded Nellie Peoples the prize for her outstanding collaborative project with Sam Tomkins for Fusion: the Art of Eating, the official launch event for DESIGN Canberra and annual fundraising event for Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre.
Nellie and Sam designed and manufactured 165 stainless steel palm sized vessels for the evening, which were used to present the evening’s "fully design taste experience".
The award was announced by Bob Fenderson, from Designcraft, during the DESIGN Canberra closing party at the Museum of Australia. Designcraft sponsored the award of $2,500 to assist Nellie in the development of new work, materials and research.
Chelsea Lemon, a current third year student in the Furniture workshop, was also awarded the Designcraft Craft + Design People’s Choice Award, for her piece in the exhibition Crafted ’14.
The exhibition was a public showcase of furniture and objects that represent the physical outcomes from learning and researching, discovery, experimentation and growth from the School of Art Furniture workshop.
Reuben Bokaba, a second-year student from the Textiles Workshop won the Chief Minister’s Award for his work Autumn Winds which was in the Flagging our Future exhibition.
