Poetry slam final held

Last week the final of the first annual Voice Slam, hosted by poet, rapper and ANU graduate, Omar Musa, was held. The program has been designed to give young high school students an opportunity to share their creativity through spoken word and song. The Voice Slam is run by the ANU Student Equity Office as part of the University’s Access and Equity strategy.

Throughout the year ANU Student Equity Ambassador Will Small has been running poetry workshops with students in ANU partnership schools in regional New South Wales and Canberra as part of the Voice Slam project.

“What I've enjoyed most is hearing young people share such a diverse range of perspectives, dreams and ideas,” Mr Small said.

“Voice slam is important because through it young people can form a link between high school and university, allowing older students to mentor and encourage younger ones and creating space for younger students to remind everyone that age has nothing to do with the importance of your message.”

This year ANU Student Equity has run three mini-slam events, with the support of ACT Libraries at Kippax, Erindale and Gungahlin in the build-up to the final Voice Slam tomorrow.

The event also featured a guest performance from SMX, the runners up in The Rumble Poetry Slam hosted in Sydney earlier this year.
