New and improved facility for Glass and Ceramics workshop students

New and returning students of Glass and Ceramics at the ANU School of Art and Design will get to enjoy a renovated kiln space from semester one.

Head of the Glass Workshop Associate Professor Richard Whiteley described the former site in the School’s courtyard as having been under-utilised and needing an update.

“The area was mainly a storage area for ceramics and glass,” he says.

“We kept unused kilns there and there was limited working space.”

The old kilns have been removed, and the entire space renovated. Two sets of kilns, one from Ceramics and one from the Glass workshop, will be moved in.

The site will also be home to a batch room for mixing glazes, and a spray booth for spraying ceramic glazes.

“It basically pulls a number of potentially hazardous material handling and fume issues together that can all be managed with the proper extraction system,” Associate Professor Whiteley explains.

He adds that the renovation will free up space in the two workshops, and give students space to explore new techniques.

“Particularly in Glass, because they'll be able to do the type of firings that we haven't been able to do before because of earlier restrictions.”

The renovations have been made possible by a significant investment from the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences. Work is expected to be completed in time for semester one.
