Arts students off to universities around the world

Seven College of Arts and Social Sciences students are among the 15 ANU winners of Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships in the 2016 round of the Australian Government-backed awards.

The Endeavour Scholarships promote knowledge, education links and ties between students at Australian universities and participating countries around the world.

Of the recipients, five are research fellowships, eight are postgraduate scholarships and two are executive fellowships.

Sarah McNeill, who is studying a Master of Culture, Health & Medicine, will be at the University of Oxford from April 2016 after completing a three-month scholarship at the World Health Organisation in Geneva.

She says the scholarship represents a rare opportunity to pursue research an institution such as Oxford.

"I'm looking forward to working with some inspiring mentors and champions of evidence-based medicine and policy," she said.

"It's also a chance for me to start conducting my own independent research - a simultaneously exciting and daunting prospect."

Teaching and rapport with lecturers has helped, the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Medicine, Biology and Environment student says.

"ANU has also opened a window for me due to willingness of supervisors to act as referees and their ongoing encouragement to pursue this path. Practically speaking, the coursework has developed my skills in critical analysis and presenting convincing arguments."

Endeavour Fellow Peter Varela is heading to the University of Michigan's Office of Tax Policy Research, to continue his research on the Australian taxation system.

Peter says he hopes to replicate his Australian data with American data, to see how similar or different the two systems are.

"The US is the leader in empirical public finance," he said.

"America does better than most places around the world, so I'll get to go across there and discuss what I'm doing with a whole range of people."

In the 2016 round, 198 scholarships have been offered to Australian students to further their skills and knowledge overseas.
