ANU academics recognised at Canberra Critics Circle Awards

Several ANU academics have been recognised for their skills at the Canberra Critics Circle Awards held on Tuesday 30th November.
The Canberra Critics Circle is a group of critics who provide a focal point for Canberra reviewers in print and electronic media through discussions and forums. As part of their discussions they make awards to ACT region artists each year based on certain noticeable qualities.
Patsy Hely from the School of Art was recognised for her exhibition “Roundabout” that was showcased at the Helen Maxwell Gallery last December. As part of her exhibition she decorated her fine porcelain ceramics with intimate glimpses of Canberra life that celebrated the more domestic aspect of living in the ACT. These images were a move away from the images of national icons that are often so synonymous with the nation’s capital.
Also from the School of Art, Head of Painting Workshop Ruth Waller was presented an award for her survey exhibition of works at the Canberra Museum and Gallery. This exhibition showcased thirty years of her diverse painting practice. This award was also due to her active participation in the local and national Art scene. In the past twelve months she has presented solo exhibitions at both the Helen Maxwell Gallery in Canberra and the Watters Gallery in Sydney.
Representatives of the School of Music were also recognised for their achievements. The Street Theatre and ANU School of Music received an award for Geoffrey Lancaster and Caroline Stacey’s production of Dido and Aeneas which breathed new life into the famous work by staging the opera in a contemporary street-culture setting.
