Student blog submission guidelines

The College of Arts and Social Science (CASS) student blog, which we refer to as the CASS Student Blog gives ANU students an insight into life as a humanities, creative arts and social sciences student at ANU – as told by other students. We’ll be featuring two to three new posts each month and each post will be promoted in CASS publications and on social media.

How to Submit

Email your finished story to externalrelations.cass@anu.edu.au

Or before you commence you may wish to send us a short (50-100 word) story pitch. We’ll have a read and let you know if it’s a good fit for the blog.

What we’re looking for

The best way to understand what we’re looking for is to read our blog.

Essentially, we’re looking for student perspectives on life as a humanities, creative arts and social sciences student at ANU.

Your story might be about:

  • Adventures in Canberra and surrounds
  • Participating in ANU clubs, societies and residential colleges
  • Moving to Canberra or Australia for study
  • Studying abroad, exchange or internship experiences
  • Studying, exams
  • Overcoming challenges in life and at university
  • Social life, friendships, relationships
  • Campus facilities, best study spots, best eats, etc.

Your story could be in a narrative storytelling style or a ‘Top 5…’ type format, 500-1,000 words long.

We’ll need an image to accompany your story – good quality, landscape-oriented. You must own the rights to the image or have written permission from the copyright owner to re/publish the image.

Rights

We ask for first serial rights for any story you send us. This means your story must not have appeared anywhere else, either in print or online. This includes publication on your own website.

If we publish your story, we’ll receive exclusivity (for a period of six months from the date of publication), and the right to keep the story in print. We won't place any limits on what you can do with your story after the exclusivity period has ended.

If you story is successful we will ask you to fill in a copyright clearance form and proof of copyright permission for the use of the image.

Payment

We will not offer payment for your story. You will, however, receive editorial guidance on writing your story and feedback on any changes we might make – so, valuable advice from professional writers and experience in navigating the publishing process.

Multiple and simultaneous submissions

It's fine to send us more than one story pitch at a time, but please don't send more than three at once. We’ll also consider proposals for a content series.

We understand if you want to submit your story to multiple publications. Please let us know, however, if a story you've submitted to us has been accepted elsewhere.

Our response time

We’ll try to reply to all story submittions within two weeks, though there may be delays during busy periods or holidays.

If you're waiting for a reply from us, please keep an eye on your junk mail folder in case it’s made its way there. If you submitted more than three weeks ago and haven’t heard back from us, email us at externalrelations.cass@anu.edu.au
