Study GSS with us

Getting started

Consider your areas of interest by searching the Programs and Courses website.

Timetabling can be checked for most courses. (Note that some timetables are added under NOTICEBOARD). If you need more information, email the ‘academic contact’ for the course for clarification.

If you are specifically interested in online courses, read though the offerings on the ANU online courses page.

Because there is so much choice in GSS, it is recommended that you first discuss your study plan with the Student Advisor – Graduate Studies. This can be done through a face-to-face appointment, or by email or telephone, if preferred.

Admission to GSS

The standard minimum admission requirement for entry into the Graduate Certificate of Studies is the completion of a Bachelor degree from an Australian tertiary institution, or its international equivalent GPA of 4/7.

Admission into the Master of Studies (Advanced) is by transfer from the Master of Studies only, and requires a minimum GPA of 6.0/7.0 and the approval of an identified supervisor for the thesis.

All GSS applicants must provide evidence that their English language ability meets the minimum ANU requirements for admission. Please see the requirements and the ANU policy document: English Language Requirements.

Supporting documents are required with applications. It is acceptable to provide uncertified documents at the application stage but you will be required to provide colour scanned copies of your original documents before admission can be finalised.

How to apply

Australian & New Zealand citizens, Permanent Residents

If you are an Australian Citizen, a New Zealand Citizen, or a Permanent Resident you are considered to be a domestic applicant. (If you are not a domestic applicant please see International applicants below.)

All domestic applications need to be submitted through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Domestic applications will be accepted and assessed throughout the year, however please note that strict deadlines are in place for commencing in either the first or second half of the year. To provide for potential enrolment in courses available in non-standard semester sessions, offers will be made for commencement in the Summer term (rather than Semester 1) if for the first half of the year; offers will be made for commencement in the Winter term (rather than Semester 2) if for the second half of the year.

There are no Commonwealth Supported Places available for this Program but FEE-Help is available subject to your individual eligibility. Find more information on the Study Assist website.

Information about the application process and relevant forms are directly available in the UAC portal: UAC Postgraduate. You may apply for the following awards in the Graduate Studies Program:

If any part of the process requires clarification or you need assistance or additional information, please contact us at

International applicants

To check if you are an international applicant, please see our Apply page. This section will also guide you through our English language requirements, provide information about academic entry requirements and list the application deadlines for each semester.

If you are international, please submit your application directly to ANU though the online portal. You will find everything you need to know about applying as an international student on our International students page.

International applicants may select from the following degree in this program:

  • Graduate Certificate of Studies (program code: 6109)

In your application ensure you have included:

  • an electronic full colour copy of your academic transcript/s
  • your IELTS or other English Language test result if required
  • a CV or resume if applicable.

Your application will be assessed as quickly as possible, usually within 3 - 4 weeks.

If your application is successful, you will receive an offer letter by email from the ANU Admissions Office. The letter will contain important information about any conditions you need to meet, how to accept, and how to make the payment of your tuition fee deposit.

Once you have accepted your offer and paid your deposit, the University will email your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE), which you will need in order to apply for an international student visa. If you plan to study while in Australia on a different visa, please make that clear in your application. Your Student Visa Application requires completion of the IELTS Test. Candidates should ensure the IELTS results are available before applying to ANU.

In some countries, visa processing takes considerable time. You may be required to undertake pre-visa assessment prior to payment of deposit and issue of the eCOE. For more information on visa requirements and the issuing process, please contact the Australian embassy or diplomatic mission in your home country. Find more information on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website.
