Bach's St John Passion - World premier english translation

11 April 2012

The Passion of Christ according to St John is one of Bach’s choral masterpieces and is perhaps the most often performed and best loved of his works. On Thursday 5 April in Canberra’s Llewellyn Hall, a new version in English was given its world premiere in a translation by ANU graduate Christopher Steele.

The concert featured UK-based tenor, Steele, who sang the main role of the Evangelist with one of Canberra’s leading acappella choirs, The Oriana Chorale. The performance was conducted by David Mackay, with soloists from the ANU School of Music and an orchestra led by Barbara Jane Gilby.
