The Ethel Tory Languages Scholarships
The Ethel Tory Language Scholarship provides funds to assist students undertaking full-time study outside Australia, in the following categories:
- Language courses conducted off shore by ANU and recognised for credit towards an ANU award (degree)
- Language courses offered by an approved international education provider and recognised for credit towards an ANU award (degree)
- A program of study, offered by an approved international education provider, delivered in a foreign language and recognised for credit towards an ANU award (degree).
- Applicants must be ANU students who are currently studying language at an advanced level within their undergraduate or postgraduate ANU degree (either in the School of Language Studies, the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies, the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific)
-
International students are eligible to apply but may not use the scholarship for study in their country of origin.
- Applicants must be studying full time while overseas.
The following criteria will be taken into account in ranking applications:
- Academic merit, as evidenced in grades achieved in prior language study at ANU
- Student motivation and need for financial support, as detailed in a one-page personal statement outlining the student's reasons for participating in the international language study experience
-
Whether the applicant has been awarded any other funding, grants or scholarships for language study
- Access and equity considerations, including, if relevant, financial circumstances.
Applications will be ranked by a committee with representation from the College of Asia & the Pacific, and the College of Arts & Social Sciences. Recommendations from the Committee will be approved by the relevant College Dean.
Applications are currently open.
Up to $2,500 to cover documented travel costs.
Number of scholarships awarded
The number of scholarships awarded in each year will be contingent on the Ethel Tory Endowment fund.
The language study program must be completed as approved under the award of the scholarship. Upon completion of the course and return to ANU, the student must provide:
- A short report (500-1000 words) on the study experience
- Official evidence from participating organisation, stating that the course of language study was completed.
Failure to complete the course of study for which the scholarship was awarded may result in students being required to repay the scholarship funds.
There will be two rounds of application in 2012. Applications must be submitted through the ANU Apollo (online) web form with full supporting documentation by:
23 April 2012 (please note, dates are subject to change).
